The Story of Virtopia 2: Legends

Updated 12/5/2001

The Onslaught
Ten thousand yarn ago, Virtopia was a peaceful planet, heavily populated with a variety of unique species. Reliant on trade with cultures and traders from other planets to provide them with supplies, the overly trusting Virtopians were taken by surpise when a highly evolved race known as the "Technoghiests" landed, and threatened to strip the planet of it's natural resources.

A massive and deadly war ensued, and millinos of Virtopians were slaughtered. Wave upon wave of horrible, destructive machines descended on the planet, laying waste to everything in their path.

Courage Exemplified
But the Virtopians resisted the dark and final fate which the invading force thought would be handed so easily. The ancient N'Dorian mystics, guided by the Guardian Council's elders, summoned their courage. Using their most powerful magic and bravest Guardian Warriors, they collectively presented a strong defense against the Technoghiests invasion force.

In a attempt to rid the planet of it's uncontrollable and surprisingly powerful indiginous inhabitants, the ruthless Technoghiests used a highly experimental weapon which was intended to destroy all life on the planet rather than accept defeat at the hands of such unevolved, simple creatures.

Best Laid Plains
Instead, the weapon malfunctioned as they were preparing to deliver the weapon, and Virtopia was knocked from it's orbital path around it's twin suns, drifting into deep space.

Now believed to have been completely destroyed, the Technoghiests became victims of their own weapons of mass destruction, but also nearly managed to destroy the Virtopians. The few who survived the holocaust, the Legends, quickly entered an icy hibernation as their planet froze in the empty cold of space.

The Sun Rises Again
By sheer chance, the planet fell into a weak orbit around another star, after several thousands of yarn. Life slowly returned to Virtopia, as the heat from the giant sun warmed its soil. Plant life returned quickly, and soon after, a handful of Virtopians awoke from their forced hibernation to find themselves in a strange new part of the universe. Although deep stress fractures from when the planet was ripped from it's orbit are found across the planets, a large portion of Virtopia is still inhabitable.

The sub-atomic neutrino particles from the Technoghiest's failed weapon that once blanketed the planet in a phosphorus glow, had strangely given them enhanced intelligence, and restored long-forgotten abilities such as telepathy and telekinesis, the power to control their surroundings, and most amazingly, the ability to spontaneously evolve into even more advanced lifeforms.

The Legends that still live are known to tell stories of the powerful magic that once helped defend their planet from certain destruction. Many young ones are fascinated with these stories, considered by many to be simple myths, and discarded as fairytales.

Making a New Home
Virtopians, never lacking ambition, began the task of rebuilding their homes and their civilization, daunted only by occasional, but increasingly frequent attacks by a few small groups of savage creatures left from the Technoghiest's invasion force.

With their newfound intelligence, some of the Virtopians have been able to reverse engineer and adapt some of the ancient technology left behind by the invading force, but as a whole, the planet frowns upon any use of technology and many blame the devices, not their creators, for the near destruction of their beloved planet. Those against the use of such devices also fear that some of the equipment left behind might be dangerous, and capable yet of causing another holocaust. From time to time, great stockpiles of the Technoghiests' weapons are found, but never in usable condition.

Therefore, two distinct cultures have evolved: those who practice technology-free lifestyles, and those who would use technology to make a better life for themselves and others. The two groups co-exist in harmony, but tensions have increased as of late as mistrust grows between the leaders of the two factions.

Both groups remain closely linked, however, by the common fear that another group of Technoghiests may still exist, and might find Virtopia again.

Visitors Again
Hatred still lingers on for the long since perished Technoghiests, and all Virtopians have quietly sworn to never forget those who fell before them, those sacrificed everything to protect their home and their love ones from an unrelenting evil.

This fear, often displayed as outright paranoia, was most evident when the scientists' short range atmospheric sensors sounded an alarm. Dozens of small craft were descending to the planet's surface. This time there were no guardians, no warriors. Crowds of Virtopians waited, silent and motionless, as several ships landed outside of Tofutti, one of Virtopia's largest villages. The high pitched whine from the ships' engines slowly descended into faint whispers.

Steam escaped from cooling vents as a landing door opened on one of the small landing craft, scarred with burns and heavy weapons damange. Footsteps were heard echoing from metallic steps hitting the boarding ramp, and two average sized figures appeared.

As the beings removed their helmet and gasped for air, tasting it deeply as if their first, the Virtopians wondered who it could be, these creatures that came to them in ships so similar to those shown in the historical scriptures.

The earthlings, looking for a new home, had arrived on Virtopia and peaceful greetings were exchanged....
